I have put together a couple of collections of photos from Venice which were taken right after New Year 2017. It is such an over-photographed, over-painted city that we can take it for granted and become overly familiar with it, but it truly is a wonder! Everyone knows the wide view, classic pictures of Venice, but it's also nice to slow down and look at the stunning details that are all over the city.
There is so much beauty in Venice that it is overwhelming - the only thing not to enjoy is the number of other people who also want to share the experience. But I've discovered even on a crowded day in summer, you can find quiet spots if you slip off by a side canal and allow yourself to get lost for a while. Sometimes I think the reflections are more interesting than the actual buildings. I lost count of how many times the trusty Lion of St Mark appears around the city. Who first conceived the design for the gondola? What an amazingly beautiful vessel. It's so wonderful that these quirky little boats have lasted through the years and still fill the canals in the 21st Century.
