I love to visit museums and historic houses. Something that attracts me about the pre-plastic years is that because everything was made from wood, metal, glass or fairly natural fabrics, the colour palette is coordinated and soothing.
Of course the reality of life was hard work and long hours of intense, low paid labour, but without the harried workers, the remnants look peaceful.
These photos were taken in various historic houses, mostly in England and Europe, over a period of several years. I always wonder about the lives of the folks who lived there and the conversations that were held in those busy kitchens. Stories of love and friendship, births and deaths, the rhythm of every day life and the passing of seasons.
Somehow looking at the beautifully, individually handcrafted pieces is refreshing to me, I hope it is to you as well.
