Ever since I was a small child, I’ve been fascinated by windmills; the ones we use on Australian properties for water and also traditional timber mills which have been used for centuries in Europe to grind grain, spices, pigments etc.

During a trip to Romania, I took the opportunity to visit the Astra Open Air Museum outside of the beautiful city of Sibiu. It was the end of winter and still bitterly cold. The museum was not properly open, the houses and inside displays and demonstrations were closed, but it was still interesting to spend the day walking the grounds and learning about the traditional buildings of Romania’s history.

The timber windmills were faithfully reconstructed using all traditional methods. Lots of lovely, rustic timber, weathered canvas, handmade rope and wire. Muted colours and graphic shapes and lines.
